KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- India have three captains in three formats
- The 2027 ODI World Cup will be played in October
- Rohit has been leading the ODI team since 2022
After the Indian Test team underwent a transition with Shubman Gill replacing Rohit Sharma as the captain of the test team following the latter's retirement from the longest format, India currently has three captains in three different formats, with Rohit still in charge of the ODI team while Suryakumar Yadav is leading the T20I outfit.
However, that might not be the case for long. As per a report by Hindustan Times (HT), the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee are keen to hand the captaincy of the team in the ODI format to Gill, which will mean the 25-year-old is the captain of the side in two of the three formats.
The published information states that India wants to avoid having three captains. With the 2027 World Cup set to take place in October, it is still two and a half years away. The report claims that, as Rohit would have turned 40 by then, it is not certain if his form and fitness will allow him to play the tournament.
It is not yet clear if the move to make Gill the ODI captain will be made right away, and a lot will depend on how the workload of the three-format players is managed ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Did BCCI Expect Rohit Sharma To Retire After Winning Champions Trophy?
The same report has claimed that BCCI expected Rohit to bid adieu to ODI cricket after leading India to victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy (CT), but there have been no discussions with the 38-year-old over his future in the 50-over format.
“Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors over his ODI future," a BCCI official was quoted saying by HT.
After announcing his Test retirement last month, Rohit specifically stated that he will continue playing ODI cricket, while a social media post by BCCI claimed that he will remain the captain in the format.
After a substandard tournament with the bat, Rohit saved his best for the last and won the Player of the Match (POTM) award in the CT 2025 final against New Zealand. Rohit made a knock of 76 as the Men in Blue registered a four-wicket win.
Rohit has been leading India in ODI Cricket since 2022 and led the final to the final of the 2023 Cricket World Cup to with some inspiration leadership.
