A new era will kick off in Indian cricket when Shubman Gill will make his Test captaincy debut against England on June 20. The 25-year-old was bestowed with the captaincy following Rohit Sharma's sudden retirement from Test cricket. During the Australia tour, Rohit confirmed that he hadn't retired from Tests but he seemingly changed his mind before the England tour.
India will also be without the services of Virat Kohli, who retired after Rohit. Virat led India from 2014 to 2022. With 40 wins from 68 Tests, he ended his career as India's most successful Test captain.
Ahead of the England tour, Aakash Chopra shared his take on Shubman and told him to learn from Virat. "You can take inspiration from Virat Kohli’s success, his hunger for runs, his leadership—but not necessarily his batting number. That’s a very individual choice. Similarly, Shubman should play where he contributes best," he told JioHotstar.
"Batting position isn’t about copying someone—it’s about where you fit in the team and how it benefits the side. Learn from Kohli’s mindset, play with an extra bowler if needed. That’s what leaders do—make sacrifices for the team."
Shubman has done captaincy in T20Is but it will be the first time when he will lead the country in Tests. He has done captaincy in red-ball cricket at the domestic level.
India tour of England schedule
The India-England five-match Test series will kick off on June 20, with the first Test taking place in Leeds. The action will move to Birmingham for the second Test match from July 2 to 6. Lord's will host the third Test match from July 10 to 14.
Manchester and London will host the last two Tests from July 23 and 31, respectively. India returned home with a 2-1 lead over England in 2021. They lost the fifth Test, played in 2022.
