Shreyas Iyer once again proved his mettle on the captaincy front by leading Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final of IPL 2025. One of the most underperforming teams in IPL's history, PBKS cleared the league stage for the first time since 2014 and made it to the final. The Shreyas Iyer-led side suffered a heartbreak at the hands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the summit clash.

While Iyer couldn't lead PBKS to an IPL title win, his success on the captaincy front could see him get rewarded with captaincy in international cricket. The Indian Express reported that Shreyas Iyer has "officially" joined the white-ball captaincy race. He could also make his T20I and Test comeback.

"Right now he just plays ODIs but after this IPL we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race," an official told The Indian Express.

Suryakumar Yadav is the present T20I captain while Rohit Sharma leads the ODI team. Shubman Gill, who recently took over as the Test captain, is the vice-captain in white-ball cricket. Shreyas has been the vice-captain in white-ball cricket in past on a stand-in basis.

Shreyas Iyer has enjoyed huge success on the captaincy front in IPL. He started his captaincy career with Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2018. He took over the charge in the middle of IPL 2018. He captained DC to the second round of IPL 2019. DC played their first-ever IPL final in 2020.

Shreyas joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2022 mega-auction. He captained KKR to their first IPL trophy in a decade when they defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in a one-sided final in 2024.

KKR didn't retain him despite winning the title under his captaincy. PBKS spent a huge sum of Rs 26.75 crore on him and made it to the final for the first time since 2014.
