Roland Garros is all set for a Jannik Sinner versus Carlos Alcaraz final after both players reached the title match of the French Open on Friday night.
Sinner, the reigning World No. 1, sealed his place in the first Roland Garros final of his career after defeating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 7-6(3).
It was a sapping battle in three sets, but Sinner had just enough fuel to outwit Djokovic with his ability to hit the ball with consistent power. The defeat firmly spoiled Djokovic's hopes of winning his fourth title at Roland Garros and his career’s 25th Grand Slam.
Both players used the conditions well and stayed in the game, hitting the ball hard from the baseline before Sinner broke the deadlock by raising the level of his game, overpowering Djokovic in longer rallies.
As the quality of Sinner's rallies got higher and higher, Djokovic adjusted his tactics by getting aggressive. He created half chances, but Sinner was way ahead of him with an even faster game. His brute power took the best out of Djokovic.
After having a medical time-out, Djokovic stepped up the aggression and nullified the world number one’s returning qualities. The Serbian great even played an inspired game in the tenth game to create multiple set points. But Sinner responded with an attack as he came to the net and put pressure of his own, saving the set points as the third set went to a tiebreak.
In the end, it was a valiant effort from Djokovic, but Sinner was way too strong as he produced a dominant tiebreak to reach his first Roland Garros final.
After the match, Sinner heaped praise on Djokovic and expressed his happiness to be in the final. “It was such a special occasion for me playing against Novak in a semi-final of a Grand Slam,” the Italian was quoted by the BBC Sport website as saying.
“It was so amazing, I had to step up and play the best tennis I could. It shows again what a role model he is for all of us, especially for young players. What he is doing is incredible. I wish him only the best for the rest of the season. We are so lucky to see him play high-level tennis,” added Sinner.
Sinner is now set to face Alacaraz, who cruised into a second consecutive Roland Garros final after Lorenzo Musetti retired in the fourth set of their semi-final clash.
