BCCI is set to issue an advisory to avoid a tragic incident like the Bengaluru stampede that left at least 11 people dead and several injured as thousands of fans thronged outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
As a large number of people rushed in to see the RCB cricketers, who were first felicitated at Vidhana Soudha before the parade at the stadium, chaos ensued. As the event was planned in a short time, the Bengaluru City Police were stretched out and failed to control the crowd.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the hasty organisation of the event led to the stampede. Saikia said such an event should be meticulously planned before its organisation. He also referred to the Indian cricket team’s open bus victory parade in Mumbai after their T20 World Cup win last year, which went smoothly due to careful planning by the BCCI.
“When BCCI handles it, we take time and handle everything. For the T20 World Cup victory parade in Mumbai, we took some time and did it. In Bengaluru, it was done within hours, and I think that was the factor," Saikia was quoted as saying by CNN-News18.
He also said that the Indian board does not have any control over the celebrations of RCB, but to avoid such tragedies in the future, it will issue an advisory.
“Whatever happened is very unfortunate. But we don’t want to play the guilty game now. BCCI looks after the event up to the award presentation ceremony after such tournaments, but from now on we will try to put at least some advisory so that such incidents do not happen," Saikia said.
So far, four officials of RCB and the event management firm DNA Entertainment Private Limited have been taken into custody in connection with the stampede. The police detained them in a joint operation by the crime branch and Bengaluru Police.
Nikhil Sosale, Head of Marketing and Revenue of RCB, along with Sunil Mathew and Kiran Kumar from DNA Entertainment Private Limited, are being questioned by the police.
They have been booked under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 118 (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt by using dangerous weapons or means), 121 (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 190 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of an offense committed in prosecution of common object), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging their duty), and 125(12) (acts endangering life or personal safety of others).
Meanwhile, the franchise's parent company - Diageo - a British multinational alcoholic company, which owns United Spirits Limited, continues to maintain silence over the matter. There have been a couple of statements by the RCB but not a single word from Diageo yet.
