Rohit Sharma played a scintillating knock (81 off 50 balls) on Friday as his innings helped Mumbai Indians post a mammoth 228 for 5 against Gujarat Titans in the crucial IPL 2025 Eliminator in Mullanpur.
Rohit's fiery knock was studded with 9 fours and 4 sixes as he shared an 84-run partnership with Jonny Bairstow to lay the foundation of Mumbai Indians' innings. Not only did Rohit play a great knock, he also anchored the MI innings by staying at the crease for most of the overs. Rohit was dismissed in the 17th over by Prasidh Krishna.
Mumbai Indians eventually won the match by 20 runs, with their bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Ashwini Kumar, and Richard Gleeson dazzling with the ball to restrict the Titans to 208 for 6 in the stipulated 20 overs.
Despite the win, Rohit has a big regret. "I've got only four fifties (this season). I think I would have liked to get more. I do understand the importance of playing the Eliminator and it was a complete team performance,” said Rohit during the post-match presentation.
Rohit is also the second-highest run scorer for MI this season with 410 runs, behind Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 673 runs. Courtesy of his innings in the Eliminator, Rohit became the second batter to complete 7000 IPL runs, after Virat Kohli, who leads with 8618 runs.
Rohit was adjudged the Player of the Match for his innings against GT, but he shed light on the two reprieves he got in the innings. Rohit was dropped twice in the match - once at 3 and then at 12. He capitalised on the chances.
“It's trying to understand how I can play my best. Today, after having the luck going my way, I knew I had to make the most of it. I'm glad I could do that, and get the team into a good position.
“We knew it would be slightly challenging with the dew coming in. I've played all those shots in the game before, and unfortunately, I found fielders. I got lucky as those catches got dropped.” Rohit lauded his opening partner Bairstow.
“I've watched Bairstow over the years from the other side. We know what he can do upfront with the bat. He took his chances, and it came off. We always look for that kind of start,” said Rohit.
