Not Jasprit Bumrah! Abhishek Sharma Names 25-Year-Old Star As One Of The Best Indian Players Across Formats

Jasprit Bumrah has quickly emerged as India's greatest player across all formats, for the magic he has produced with the ball for the team. He even won the Sir Garfield Sobers Player of the Year Trophy in 2024, for him performances across all three formats. However, srtar India opener Abhishek Sharma, has not named Bumrah as one of the best Indian player across the three formats. Hebestowed newly crowned Test captain and his fellow Punjab batter Shubman Gill with this honour.
Abhishek Sharma said that he was very happy with Gill's huge achievement of becoming Test Captain, especially since they started playing since the u-14 and u-16 Punjab teams. He then went on to say that Gill is one of India's best players India has produced across three formats.
“I think if I see his career you know if I remember the old days when we were just started playing for the U-14 and U-16 Punjab team. As youngsters, we all started with the red ball. From that time to now, it is a big achievement to become India’s Test captain and I feel very proud of him," Abhishek said.
“Humne junior cricket saath dekha tha… (We’ve watched and played junior cricket together.) He is one of the best players India has produced in all three formats, and wo acha isko nibhayega bhi (he will play his role to perfection). I believe he will do really well for Team India and as a captain as well," he added.
Why Shubman Gill Was Selected As Captain
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that Shubman Gill was selected keeping in mind the future. The feedback from the dressing room also indicated about his good leadership qualities.
"You do not select a captain for one or two series, you have to plan for the longer term. We are hopeful that he [Shubman Gill] will learn with time," Agarkar told the media while addressing the press conference.
"Shubman Gill is the guy we feel is a three-format player. Has shown a lot more qualities over the last year, that’s what we hear from the dressing room. He has shown some decent leadership qualities. We want to try and give him the experience,"
