India are all set to take on England in a five-match Test series from June 20 which marks the start of their campaign in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. After the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, India have announced a new-look squad with Shubman Gill as the captain. The one big ommission from the squad that everyone is talking about is Shreyas Iyer, who has not even found a place in the India A squad. This might come as a surprise given his terrific run of form in white-ball cricket for India. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has given a pretty direct answer when asked about Iyer's omission.

In an interaction with the media at an event, Gautam Gambhir had a sharp retort when he was asked why Shreyas Iyer was not in the India squad for the England series.

"Main selector nahi hu (I'm not the selector)," he said to the reporter.

According to a report by The Times of India, the selectors are not convinced by Shreyas Iyer's skills in the red ball game, and this is why they did not consider him for selection. The selectors feel that his strokeplay and attitude is more suited to the white-ball game.

“Iyer’s new stance, bold strokeplay, and carefree attitude to batting are all suited to the white-ball game now. The selectors aren’t convinced about his red-ball skills," a source close to the proceedings told the publication

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar also said that there is no room for Shreyas Iyer in Test cricket at the moment even though he has played well in domestic cricket.

"Yes, Shreyas Iyer has played well in domestic cricket, but at the moment, there is no room for him in the Test Team,” Agarkar said,
