Joe Root has been one of the most consistent performers in Test cricket over the last five years. He is the leading run scorer of the World Test Championship (WTC), with 5543 runs in 64 matches. Root would be instrumental to England's chances in the five-match Test series against India from June 20. If Root has a good series, England will be in a great position to win the series and get the WTC cycle off to a winning start.
India put England under pressure on the last tour in 2021-22 when they drew the series 2-2, however, they have not won a series in the country since 2007 when Rahul Dravid led the team to a 1-0 win. This year, the challenge will be tougher, especially after the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The team will also be without Mohammed Shami, who wasn't picked in the squad due to fitness concerns, while Jasprit Bumrah also won't play all five Tests of the series.

Joe Root On Cusp Of History

For India to win the series, they need to keep Joe Root quiet, but unfortunately, Root has always been a nemesis for Team India. The former England captain is on the cusp of a historic feat which he should be able to break easily during the five Tests. Root needs just 154 runs to become the first player in the world to score 3000 Test runs vs India. Root currently has 2846 runs in 30 tests, with 10 hundreds against the Asian giants. Root is already the leading run scorer in the India vs England Test series, followed by Sachin Tendulkar who scored 2535 runs in 32 Tests.

Shubman Gill To Lead India

Meanwhile, after the retirement of Rohit Sharma, India named Shubman Gill the captain of the Test team. Rishabh Pant was picked as the vice-captain. Karun Nair made a comeback to the India squad, while Sai Sudharsan was handed a maiden call-up.
India Squad: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav
