Royal Challengers Bengaluru's star batter Virat Kohli broke yet another record after he became the first cricketer in the world to score 9,000 runs for a single team in T20 cricket.
Kohli achieved the feat while scoring 54 off 30 balls, including 10 fours. By scoring the half-century - his 63rd in the Indian Premier League - Kohli claimed the record for the most fifties in IPL history. He went past David Warner’s tally of 62 fifties.
Opening the innings with Philip Salt, the Indian batter shared a crucial 61-run partnership, laying the foundation for RCB's 228-run chase against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. During his innings, Kohli batted at a strike rate of 180. He was eventually dismissed by Avesh Khan in the 12th over of the chase.
Kohli now has eight centuries and 63 fifties from 257 innings in the IPL, while former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain David Warner has four tons and 62 half-centuries from 184 innings.
Although RCB found themselves in trouble for a brief period, losing the wickets of Rajat Patidar and Liam Livingstone in consecutive deliveries in the eighth over bowled by William O'Rourke, the Bengaluru-based side recovered from the mini-collapse, thanks to Jitesh Sharma and Mayank Agarwal's efforts.
Jitesh smashed an unbeaten 85 off 33 balls, including eight fours and six sixes, while Mayank Agarwal scored an unbeaten 41 off 23 balls. RCB reached 230/4 in 18.4 overs to seal second position in the points table with 19 points.
RCB will now face Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1 on May 29.
