India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics has encountered fresh competition, with Berlin officially presenting its bid to rehost the Games on Tuesday — in the same stadium where Jesse Owens made history during the 1936 Games under the Nazi regime.

India submitted its Letter of Intent on 1st October 2024, expressing the country’s desire to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The submission was made to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Future Host Commission, marking the first concrete step in India’s ambitious plan.

Ahmedabad is being seen as a front-runner to be the host city for the 2036 Olympics, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi having expressed the government’s aspiration to host the Games last year.

India’s top sports administrators, including Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha, were present at the Paris Olympics last year to lobby for the country’s bid. Nita Ambani, the only individual member from India in the IOC, is also making efforts to bring the Games to India.

However, India now faces intense competition with Berlin entering the bidding race. Other countries that have previously expressed interest include Poland, Indonesia, South Africa, Qatar, Hungary, Turkey, Mexico, and Egypt.

Berlin’s bid — titled "Berlin+", with backing from the states of Brandenburg, Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Schleswig-Holstein — will be presented to the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) before the end-of-month deadline.

However, Germany remains flexible and may consider bidding for the 2040 or 2044 Olympics instead of 2036. It will be up to the DOSB to decide which edition of the Games to target. Berlin last hosted the Olympics in 1936, an edition infamously known as the "Nazi Olympics" under Adolf Hitler.

Los Angeles is set to host the 2028 Olympics, while Brisbane will stage the 2032 Games.
