Jasprit Bumrah took to Instagram and paid a heartfelt tribute to the Indian cricketer, a day after he announced his retirement on Monday (May 26). Bumrah reserved high praise for his former teammate with whom he won multiple trophies together.
For those unversed, Gujarat cricket legend, Priyank Panchal announced his retirement after a career that lasted 18 years. Panchal finished as his state's second-highest run-getter (7011) in first-class cricket. Overall in his red-ball cricket, the 35-year-old made 8856 runs in 127 matches. He also played 97 first-class matches and 59 T20s for the state.
Bumrah, who also plays for Gujarat, shared the dressing room with Panchal for a long period before he became a regular part of the Indian team. Infact, both Panchal and Bumrah were a key part of Gujarat's stunning revival and a vital part of the Parthiv Patel-led side that won the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2015-16 and the Ranji Trophy in 2016-17.
"Congratulations on a wonderful career, great memories. All the best for what the future lies," wrote Bumrah on his Instagram story.
Several other cricketers like India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Karun Nair left heartfelt messages for Panchal in the comments section of his post on the photo-sharing application.
"Congratulations pinkaaaaa on a wonderful career. All the love and luck for new innings," wrote Suryakumar.
"Congratulations Priyank on a wonderful career. wishing you the best," comment Karun.
Talking about Panchal, he was always considered among the top opening batters in the country and close to an India call-up. Unfortunately, he never got to play for the national team in any format. He also captained the India 'A' team on the 2021 tour of South Africa in two matches.
Panchal was called up to the Indian Test squad for the away series against South Africa in 2021-22 as an injury replacement for Rohit Sharma. He was also named in the squad for the two-match home series against Sri Lanka in 2022. However, he remained on the bench and could not get a Test cap.
