Cristiano Ronaldo nears Al Nassr exit, next move shrouded in speculation.
As his Al Nassr exit looms large, the big question is: where will Cristiano Ronaldo head next? The legendary Portuguese striker has been urged to return to the Premier League.
Ronaldo has spent two-and-a-half years at Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, scoring 99 goals in 111 appearances since joining the club in 2023.
The 40-year-old is reportedly frustrated with Al Nassr’s failure to win the Saudi Pro League and their eventual miss on Asian Champions League qualification. Al Nassr finished third in the league.
His message on social media has since gone viral. “This chapter is over,” the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said. “The story? Still being written. Grateful to all.”
Ronaldo's cryptic post has reportedly come amid a “tempting” offer from another club. Spanish outlet Marca described the offer as “important” and “major,” and noted that it came from an unnamed Brazilian club.
Though the outlet did not name the club, it stated that joining this team would give Ronaldo a chance to play in this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.
Four Brazilian clubs have qualified for this year’s Club World Cup, starting June 14 in the United States: Palmeiras, Fluminense, Flamengo, and Botafogo.
Speculation about Ronaldo leaving Al Nassr gathered momentum earlier this week when FIFA president Gianni Infantino claimed “there are discussions” about Ronaldo playing at the Club World Cup.
“Ronaldo might play for one of the teams at the Club World Cup,” he said during an interview with YouTuber and streamer IShowSpeed.
“There are discussions with some clubs, so if any club is watching and is interested in hiring Ronaldo for the Club World Cup… who knows, who knows,” said Infantino.
As speculation about Ronaldo snowballed, former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke - who left Old Trafford a year before Ronaldo’s arrival in 2003 -has urged the star footballer to return to the Premier League by joining Chelsea.
Chelsea will compete in the forthcoming Club World Cup and have sealed their spot in next season’s Champions League by finishing fourth in the Premier League.
With Chelsea looking to sign a new striker, the possibility of Ronaldo returning to the Premier League has also taken shape. Chelsea are set to face Real Betis in the Europa Conference League final on Wednesday night.
Yorke explained why Ronaldo is still a better striker for Chelsea. “Yes, why would you not? He can still do it,” Yorke told GamblingIndustryNews. “With his ambition and ability, if Chelsea are playing the way that they can and creating for him, he is still an incredible forward. I see no reason not to. He is better than what Chelsea have currently got up front there. I can tell you that they’re not the greatest team in that number nine position. So I could see why he’s linked to that move.
“I do not see any reason why you would not take a punt on it. It is just a no-brainer,” he added.
