The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) left cricket fans furious after posting a picture to celebrate the first anniversary of their third title win in the Indian Premier League (IPL), which came in 2024 under Shreyas Iyer's leadership.
For those unversed, the Shreyas-led outfit ended a 10-year wait to lift the title after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the summit clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on May 26, 2024, in Chennai after a nearly flawless campaign in which they lost just three games across the season.
However, Shreyas was not retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction in an unprecedented move. Never before had a team let go of their title-winning captain in the season after they won the title.
On Monday (May 26), KKR put out a special post to celebrate their 2024 title. However, Shreyas was missing from a special poster they made. This left fans furious as the post was quickly noticed by cricket lovers.

Although it is worth noting that the picture only included players who are currently part of the Knight Riders camp and the likes of Phil Salt and Mitchell Starc were also missing.
Coming in the 2025 IPL, KKR were allowed to retain only six players and decided to let go of Shreyas while keeping hold of Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarty among capped players. Harshit Rana and Ramandeep Singh were retained as uncapped players despite them making their debut for Indai days before the mega auction. However, they re-signed the likes of Venkatesh Iyer, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Vaibhav Arora in the auction.
KKR also lost the services of Gautam Gambhir after the 2024 campaign, who was appointed as the head coach of the Indian team days after the Kolkata-based franchise lifted the trophy.
KKR's title defense proved to be a nightmare as they finished eight in the table with just 12 points. They won just five matches while losing seven. Two of their games ended in washouts.
