Suresh Raina, the former India and Chennai Super Kings batter, has hinted at a possible reunion with his former franchise during CSK's final IPL 2025 match on Sunday in Ahmedabad, where CSK defeated table-toppers Gujarat Titans by 83 runs. Raina is currently associated with the IPL as a commentator.
But after the match, Raina made a statement indicating he might return to the franchise as a batting coach next season. The role of batting coach is currently held by Michael Hussey.
CSK’s assistant bowling coach S Sriram remained tight-lipped when quizzed about Raina’s revelation at the post-match press conference. “I do not know. I have to ask him if he said that,” Sriram told Indian Express.
On Sunday, Raina was spotted with Aakash Chopra and Sanjay Bangar during an in-studio discussion on CSK’s 2025 season.
Raina revealed that CSK are in talks to get a new batting coach on board. And when Chopra asked whether the next coach's initials start with an 'S', Raina replied with a chuckle: “He has made the fastest fifty."
The former left-handed batter played 200 T20s for CSK and leads the batting charts with 5,529 runs. He had also smashed the fastest fifty for the franchise off 16 balls in IPL 2014.
“Chalo ho gaya bhai (then it is done), you heard it first here!” - quipped Chopra in a potential confirmation of Raina's reunion with CSK next season.
Hussey has been the batting coach of CSK since 2018. But this season, CSK failed to fire as a batting unit even though they ended their campaign on a high by beating Gujarat Titans. There was some glimmer of hope for the CSK in the late replacement signings of Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, and Urvil Patel.
