Will MS Dhoni return for IPL 2026? Photo: BCCI
MS Dhoni kept the door ajar for his IPL return and said that he will decide his future in the next 4-5 months. The fans eagerly wait for Dhoni's IPL return every year and he has been playing the T20 league despite retiring from international cricket in August 2020. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retained Dhoni for Rs 4 crore in the uncapped category before the IPL 2025 mega-auction and he will earn the same amount if he decides to play IPL 2026. The fans will have to wait for few months to get an official word on Dhoni's IPL future.
Robin Uthappa shared his take on Dhoni's future after his last game of IPL 2025. Speaking on JioStar, the former CSK opener said: "It all depends on his health and how he feels. You have to understand that he really wants to play - the fire still burns. From what he said during the post-match presentation, it's clear that the fire still burns to win championships, to play out there in the middle. Now it's about going back and working on his body to bring it to the level he wants for the next IPL. If that doesn't happen, he'll call it before the mini-auction. If not, you'll see a tweet or an Instagram post."
Uthappa was part of CSK in IPL 2021 and 2022. Even though he only played 4 matches in 2021, Uthappa played a big role in CSK's title win. The right-handed batsman smashed 31 off just 15 balls in the final. He scored a match-winning 63 in the first qualifier.
CSK crash out of IPL 2025 early
CSK failed to make it to the second round of IPL 2025 and crashed out early. The Yellow Army only managed to win 4 out of their 14 matches. They won 1 out of 5 matches under Ruturaj Gaikwad. He was ruled out due to an elbow injury. Dhoni-led CSK won 3 out of 9 matches.
