- Gill will become the Indian in 29 years to achieve a rare feat
Shubman Gill will write his name in the history books when he takes charge of the Indian Test team during the marquee five-match Test series against England, which will start on June 20 at the Headingley Stadium in Leeds.
For those unversed, Gill has replaced Rohit Sharma as India's captain in the longest format of the game. The decision was announced on Saturday (May 24) by the Board of Control of Cricket's selection committee chairman, Ajit Agarkar, while naming the 18-man squad for India's first assignment of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
When Gill leads India for the first time in whites during the Leeds Test match, he will create history and become the first Indian cricketer since Sachin Tendulkar in 1996 to make his captaincy debut at the age of 25.
Infact, the 25-year-old will become India's fifth youngest captain in history after Mansoor Ali Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, and Ravi Shastri.

Gill has the chance to script some massive records in England, including becoming the youngest Indian captain to win a Test match overseas.
While this is the first time that the right-hander batter will lead India in Test cricket, he captained the team in five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe last year. Gill was also the vice-captain of the Rohit-led Indian team which won the 2025 Champions Trophy earlier this year.
