The Gujarat Titans captain, Shubman Gill, expressed his disappointment after his team went down to Chennai Super Kings in their final league game of IPL 2025 on Sunday. The Titans suffered an 83-run defeat to CSK just before their playoff clash. This was their second consecutive defeat after they lost to Lucknow Super Giants by 33 runs.
Gill, who has recently been appointed India’s Test captain, said his team could not cope with the pressure of expectations, while CSK, the bottom-placed team, had nothing to lose.
“I think the game pretty much went away from us in the powerplay, we never really came back. Chasing 230 is always a tricky target. Teams already eliminated have nothing to lose, and they come out all guns blazing. We weren’t able to stay calm under pressure, and I think we gave in to pressure. It’s very important to control runs in the middle overs. If you are not going to do that, it’s going to be challenging. That’s where we were lacking in the last two games," Gill mentioned in the post-match presentation ceremony.
Talking about the defeat, Gill said that it was difficult for them to accept the result before the playoffs, starting on May 29 in Mullanpur, Chandigarh.
“This one would be a hard pill to swallow for us. The bright side is that we have two or three games left, so the boys will be motivated to play in Mohali. Fortunately for me, going back to my hometown… played a lot of cricket there and it’s going to be really exciting," he concluded.
The defeat dented Gujarat Titans' hopes of securing a top-two finish, as the winners of the Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians match in Jaipur will take the top position. They also hope that the Royal Challengers Bengaluru lose their final league-stage game as well, for GT to finish in second spot.
