A new era will start in Indian cricket when Shubman Gill makes his Test captaincy debut against England on June 20. The star player has replaced Rohit Sharma, who has now retired from Test cricket. Shubman is only 25 and will be among the youngest Indian Test captains when he makes his captaincy debut.
Soon after his appointment, Shubman talked to the BCCI and made his first comment. Speaking to BCCI.tv, Shubman said: "As a captain, a leader should be able to know when to step in but also when to give space to the players, because everyone has kind of had a different life and grown up differently. Everyone has a different personality, so a good leader should always be able to know what makes his players to be able to have the best performance or the best outcome."
"That is always exciting to be able to have those conversations with the players, to be able to know them on a deeper level than just cricket, because then you're really able to know what can get the best out of them," he added.
Shubman has captaincy experience in international cricket as he led the Men in Blue in the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Even though he wasn't part of the 2024 T20 World Cup squad, the selectors saw a future star in Shubman and gave him captaincy.
A series later, he was appointed the full-time vice-captain of the white-ball teams. The opening batter was Rohit's deputy in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which India won.
Shubman was never part of the leadership group in Tests before his appointment as the Test captain. Jasprit Bumrah was Rohit's deputy from 2022 to 2025 but he got ignored for the top job due to his fitness issues. He isn't available to play all 5 Tests in England.
