MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings icon, led CSK out against Gujarat Titans in a high-voltage IPL 2025 clash on Sunday. But the talk of the town before the game was, would this be the last bow of the Chennai legend?
Speculation around Dhoni's retirement hit an emotional crescendo before the match, with fans flooding social media with tributes, memories, and farewell messages.
"I am not sure about the destination, but the journey of 2008–2025 is truly magical. There will never be another MS Dhoni for CSK. Love you so much," wrote one emotional fan.
"Just one more match, and then he'll disappear from the field for an entire year," wrote another, explaining his heartbreak.
Before the start of the game, at the toss of the CSK-GT game, Dhoni was asked how his body coped with the challenges of playing the IPL at the age of 43.
"It's about surviving. Every year, it's a new challenge, especially when you are at the last stage of your career. You need maintenance. It didn't trouble me when I was playing international cricket. But thanks to the support staff as well," said Dhoni.
Dhoni has already stated that he will review his future based on how his body feels closer to IPL 2026. But he did have a word to say about the unconditional love showered upon him by his fans.
"It's a very good feeling, and I always said it's a big thank you from the fans' side. That's what I believe. Whatever last few years I will be playing, it's their way of saying thank you very much for whatever you have done. It's amazing, especially when you play a sport, the appreciation from fans is what you want. And when it comes to cricket, India is the place to play," Dhoni said on Star Sports.
Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings scored an imposing 230/5 against Gujarat Titans. Devon Conway (52) and Dewald Brevis (57) scored half-centuries for CSK. Prasidh Krishna (2/22) was the pick of the bowlers for GT.
