KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • GT lost to CSK
  • GT are dependent on other results
  • MI, PBKS, RCB's two chances got a major boost
Gujarat Titans' hopes of winning a second IPL title and reaching the final for the third time in four years of their inception took a major blow after they lost their last league stage match of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
GT, who are still the table toppers, finished their campaign in the first round on an less than ideal note with two defeats in a row after losing their previous game against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 33 runs.
After sealing their place in the playoffs, GT needed just one victory in their remaining two games to seal a two-spot. However, the Titans will have to watch other teams over the next two days to know if they will play the first qualifier or the eliminator.
For those unversed, GT alongside Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru sealed their place in the playoffs last Sunday (May 18) before Mumbai Indians also confirmed their spot in the second round on Wendesday (May 21).
With seven matches left, this marked the most matches left before all four playoff spots were confirmed in IPL history. However, the teams were separated by two points, meaning there was all to play for in the remaining matches.
After today's result, GT are in first spot with 18 points while PBKS and RCB are second and third with 17 points to their name. MI are in fourth place with 16 points.

How GT, MI, RCB, PBKS Can Finish In Top Two

Gujarat Titans: The Titans' poor Net Run Rate (NRR) means that they will finish below MI if they finish on equal points. This means that they can no longer finish first as the team winning Monday's (May 26) fixture between PBKS and MI will upstage them. The Shubman Gill-led side can only secure the second spot if Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Tuesday (May 27).
Punjab Kings: The Shreyas Iyer-led side will seal a top-two spot if they defeat MI in Jaipur. They will miss out if they lose.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru: RCB will secure a top-two finish with a win against LSG. However, if they lose the match, they will have to play the eliminator.
Mumbai Indians: The five-time champions have their destiny in their own hands after a dramatic sequence of results in the last four days, with the top 3 losing all their games in this period. MI will qualify if they win their clash against PBKS but miss out if they lose.

What Happens If There Is A Washout?

If MI-PBKS Is Washed Out: Gujarat will qualify. If RCB win vs LSG, they will earn two chances to play the final. If RCB lose, PBKS will finish second.
If LSG-RCB Is Washed Out: Gujarat and the winner of the PBKS-MI clash will qualify
If both matches are washed out: GT and PBKS will qualify
