A new era will start in Indian cricket when Shubman Gill makes his Test captaincy debut in the five-match series against England on June 20. The BCCI on Saturday (May 24) officially announced Shubman as the new Test captain. The present India's white-ball vice-captain was the front-runner to become the Test captain and his appointment didn't come as a surprise.
Shubman's appointment as the Test captain marked an end to India's long 19-year-long streak which started after their T20I debut in 2006. India have never had different captains in all three formats. But that streak has now ended.
For the first time in history, India have 3 different captains in 3 formats. Shubman is the new Test captain while Rohit Sharma is still India's ODI captain. Suryakumar Yadav presently leads the T20I team.
India have had diffent captains in white-ball and red-ball cricket but they have never had 3 different captains. This could end in 2027.
Shubman took over as India's white-ball vice-captain in 2024 and he looks set to replace Rohit as the ODI captain in 2027 (after ODI World Cup).
As far as the T20I format goes, Shubman could take over the charge in that format after the 2026 T20 World Cup or the 2028 T20 World Cup.
Rishabh Pant named vice-captain
Rishabh Pant was appointed the new vice-captain of the Test team. The wicketkeeper-batsman has been a regular in the Test team since his debut in 2018 and could have been a strong contender for captaincy as well. Rishabh has led India in the T20I format.
The left-handed batsman is presently leading Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2025. The Lucknow-based franchise crashed out of the league stage of IPL. Rishabh created history at the IPL 2025 mega-auction when he joined LSG for Rs 27 crore. He is the highest-paid player in IPL's history.
