Harvansh Singh is among the lakhs of aspiring cricketers who aim to represent India in international cricket. He has already played for India U19 and is now set for his maiden England tour with the team in June-July. Many years ago, Harvansh had an option of moving to Canada and playing there.
Canada play international cricket and was part of the 2024 T20 World Cup. But he rejected his father's offer and decided to stay in India. Speaking to TimesofIndia.com, Damandeep Singh, Harvansh's father, revealed that Harvansh denied moving to Canada to live his dream of representing India in international cricket. Harvansh's father and uncle used to play cricket as a hobby in India.
"There are so many congratulatory messages. It feels good. It brings back so many memories of when Harvansh said 'no' to me about moving to Canada. He was rigid, and he's living his dream," Damandeep said.
Harvansh is inspired by Yuvraj Singh and turned southpaw because of the Indian legend. "My elder brother and I were crazy about cricket. We used to play for the sake of a hobby. Even Rajkot is 200 km away from our city. It was only in 2012 when the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) opened an academy in our town. I enrolled Harvansh in it when he was six. He picked up 'keeping from me, as I used to don the gloves as well. But he turned southpaw because of Yuvraj Singh. He's a massive Yuvraj fan and hasn't seen peak Yuvraj, but he was obsessed with the video of him hitting six sixes off Stuart Broad," Damandeep revealed.
Harvansh stays in India with his mother while his other family members are in Canada. Harvansh, who has played both formats for the junior team, will now aim to make it to the World Cup team. The ICC event will be played in 2026.
Ayush Mhatre will lead the India U19 team on the England tour. The squad also includes Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Both Ayush (Chennai Super Kings) and Vaibhav (Rajasthan Royals) shone in IPL 2025 for their respective IPL teams.
The India U19 tour of England includes 5 one-dayers and 2 multi-day matches. The matches will be played from June 27 to July 23. India U19 will play a warm-up game before the start of the series.
