The BCCI will announce the Test squad for the England tour on Saturday (May 24). The majority of players who were part of the Australia tour are set to retain their spots. A few players who are in India A could be in the national team following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Jasprit Bumrah will continue to lead India's pace attack but he won't be available for the full series. The senior pacer has reportedly given a bad news to the BCCI before the selection meeting.
The Indian Express has reported that Bumrah has told the BCCI that his body can't take the toll of more than 3 Test matches. Bumrah played all five Tests in Australia.
Bumrah suffered a back issue during Australia's first innings of the fifth Test match and didn't bowl in their chase. He was leading India in that game. Bumrah has missed many matches since his Test debut due to a back problem.
Bumrah's back issue is considered to be one of the reasons behind him not being considered for Test captaincy. He was Rohit's deputy in red-ball cricket for 3 years and looked set to become the new captain. But his back issue could see him miss out on the top job. He is unlikely to be named the vice-captain either.
Shubman Gill likely to become new Test captain
Multiple reports have confirmed that Shubman Gill is likely to become the new Test captain of India. He has never been part of the leadership group in Test cricket.
The right-handed batsman made his T20I captaincy debut on the Zimbabwe tour after the 2024 T20 World Cup. He was appointed the full-time vice-captain of the white-ball teams starting the Sri Lanka series. He was Rohit's deputy in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which India won.
Rishabh Pant is likely to replace Bumrah as the new vice-captain. He has led India in T20I cricket. Rishabh has been a regular in the Test team since his debut in 2018.
