Tottenham Hotspur earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday to end their long wait for silverware.
This was Tottenham's first trophy since 2008 and their first European title since 1984. A 42nd-minute goal by Brennan Johnson proved to be decisive at Bilbao’s San Mamés Stadium, giving Spurs their third Europa League crown.
The Welsh winger grabbed a loose ball from close range after a cross by Pape Matar Sarr took deflections off Luke Shaw and Johnson himself before creeping past United keeper Andre Onana.
Tottenham won the Europa League despite a dismal season in the Premier League, where they finished in 17th spot. With this title, Ange Postecoglou, the Australian coach of Tottenham, kept his record of winning silverware in his second season at every club he has managed.
“This club has not won a trophy for 17 years - it means so much,” said Johnson after the match.
Manchester United, who finished the Premier League just ahead of Tottenham, pushed hard for the equaliser. Rasmus Højlund even came close late on, but his effort was cleared off the line by Micky van de Ven. Luke Shaw had a final chance with a header, but Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario held firm.
With just 27 percent possession and a single shot on target, Tottenham defended really well in the second half, blocking numerous Manchester United efforts. This defeat means Manchester United ended the season without a trophy.
“I am feeling amazing. It’s what I’ve always dreamt of. Today is the day it happens … the dream comes really, really true … I’m so happy, the happiest man in the world," said Son Heung-min.
