In what comes as a big development, Delhi Capitals (DC) co-owner Parth Jindal has written to the BCCI to move the high-octane clash against Mumbai Indians out of Mumbai to another city, according to a report in ESPNcricinfo. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, and chances are high that the match will be affected by rain.
The match stands of utmost importance for DC. If they win against MI, and also win the final game, they'll qualify for the playoffs. If they lose, MI go through. A washout will hurt DC. The team currently has 13 points in 12 games, while MI have 14 points in 12 matches. If the match is washed out, MI will qualify for the playoffs if they win the final game against PBKS.
Recently, BCCI relocated the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) match on May 23 to Lucknow because of "unfavourable weather conditions" in Bengaluru.
"The forecast in Mumbai is for heavy rains, and there is a strong likelihood that the game will be washed out," Parth wrote as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. "Just as the game between RCB vs SRH has been moved out of Bengaluru in the quest for consistency and in the interest of the league it is my request that tomorrow's game also be moved to a different location as we have known for the better part of 6 days that the forecast for 21st in Mumbai is for heavy showers," he added.
The BCCI, however, is unlikely to accept the demand due to logistical challenges.
The development comes after KKR chief executive Venky Mysore wrote to the BCCI to express dissatisfaction about rule change midway through the IPL. BCCI recently introduced a rule that an extra 60 minutes can be added to the game in case of rain. Notably, KKR's match against RCB on May 17 was washed out due to rain. The washout knocked KKR out of the playoff race. KKR said it expects consistency in rule changes from the BCCI, citing if the rule was in place on May 17, they could have had a five-over game against RCB.
