Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) became the fifth team to be eliminated from the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) playoff race on Monday (May 19) after a six-wicket defeat at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
LSG owner Sanjiv Geonka took to social media and reacted his his team's failure to reach the playoffs in their first season under Rishabh Pant's captaincy. This marks the second successive campaign in which the Super Giants' will not play the playoffs having made the second round in their first two seasons in the league (2022 and 2023).
Goenka took to X and hailed the effort his team put up and stated that there was a lot to them to build on despite the challenging second half of the season.
"It’s been a challenging second half of the season, but there’s much to take heart in. The spirit, the effort, and the moments of excellence give us a lot to build on. Two games remain. Let’s play with pride and finish strong," said Goenka on X while posting a heartwarming image with Rishabh Pant and other LSG players.
At the 2025 IPL Mega Auction, LSG made a big money move to sign Rishabh Pant for a stunning value of Rs. 27 crore, which made him the most expensive player in the league's history. Despite retaining Nicholas Pooran for Rs. 21 crore, LSG named Pant as their new captain, having released KL Rahul post the 2024 season.
Pant has had a nightmare season with the bat for LSG as he made just 135 runs in 11 innings at an average of 12.27 and a strke-rate of 100.00.
LSG still have two matches remaining in the 2025 season and will next face Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on Thursday (May 22) before hosting Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Lucknow on May 27..
LSG are currently seventh in the table with 10 points to their name.
