Rishabh Pant's poor run of form in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) continued in Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) first match since the restart against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Monday (May 19) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cricket Stadium, Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
Just a few days after being criticised for demoting himself to number seven against Delhi Capitals, the LSG skipper took the bold move of promoting himself to number three and walked out ahead of Nicholas Pooran, who is not just the franchise's top-scorer this season but widely regarded as the best T20 batter in the world.
However, the move backfired for Pant as he was dismissed after making just seven runs in six balls. Sri Lankan pacer Eeshan Malinga got his wicket after completing a fine catch of his own bowling.
Sanjiv Goenka's Reaction Goes Viral
After Pant's dismissal, the cameras were quick to move towards Sanjiv Goenka. The LSG owner was visibly disappointed as the 27-year-old's horror run with the bat continued. Goenka immediately walked away from the balcony and was spotted going inside a room, with the clip going viral on social media.
Pant has had a nightmare season with the bat with just 135 runs in 12 innings so far at an average of 12.27 at a strike-rate of 100.00. He has just one half-century to his name since joining LSG.
Pant was signed by the Goenka-owned franchise at last year's 2025 IPL Mega auction in Jeddah for a whopping amount of Rs. 27 crore. He is the most expensive player in the league's history. The massive bid for Pant by LSG beat a record set by Shreyas Iyer (Rs. 26.75 crore) just minutes earlier.
Pant replaced KL Rahul as LSG's skipper. Coming into this game, the Pant-led side have won five matches in 11 outings and are still alive in the playoff race, but need to win each of their remaining games and hope for other results to go in their favour.
