India's Test captaincy is a topic of debate among the fans before the squad announcement for the England tour. India are set to have a new Test captain starting the England series as Rohit Sharma has now retired from Test cricket. Multiple reports have suggested that Shubman Gill is set to become the new Test captain.
Jasprit Bumrah was Rohit's deputy for 3 years and looked set to replace him. But the reports have suggested that he might not be part of the leadership group altogether.
Sanjay Manjrekar came out in support of Bumrah and namedropped Rohit Sharma to share his take. The noted commentator seemed to be surprised by the discussions surrounding the Test captaincy.
"Has Bumrah said he won’t captain India? Or has he ruled himself out of the England series? Then why are we discussing who will captain India?" he wrote on X.
"If Bumrah’s availability because of injuries is the issue, didn’t we have Rohit captain India in just 3 off the 5 Tests in Aus recently? Availability can’t be the be all & end all, deservability far more important. Especially in Tests," he added.
Bumrah's fitness issues are considered to be the reason behind him not being considered for Test captaincy. The right-arm pacer has missed many matches since his Test debut in 2018 and isn't confirmed to play all 5 Tests in Australia.
Bumrah suffered a back issue during the fifth Test of the series against Australia and didn't bowl in the last innings of the game. He was leading India in that fixture.
The back problem ruled him out of the 2025 Champions Trophy and he also missed the start of IPL 2025 for Mumbai Indians. Given his fitness issues, Bumrah could miss out on the top job.
Shubman Gill, who is the favourite to become the new Test captain, is likely to have Rishabh Pant as his deputy. Shubman is the present vice-captain of the white-ball teams.
