Criticised for being 'fat' and hence unfit to play at the highest level, Sarfaraz Khan has shed a whopping 10 kilograms in a month. The trigger was IPL 2025, where he was not considered by any teams - Sarfaraz went unsold.
Now back in the scheme of things with the BCCI following his selection in the India A squad for the upcoming England tour, Sarfaraz has improved his fitness by several notches. That once potbellied cricketer has become leaner and fitter in a determined bid to sustain his cricketing career.
The IPL auction snub served as a wake-up call for Mumbai’s Khan family, who have since been on a ‘weight-losing mission’ - with Sarfaraz’s father, Naushad Khan, himself losing 12 kg in a month.
“Our whole family is focused on a 'weight-losing mission.' Sarfaraz has lost nine kilograms too in six weeks, which is not easy, and he is raring to lose more weight,” Naushad was quoted as saying by The Times of India. “Both Sarfaraz and I have been slogging in the gym at the Mumbai Cricket Association's BKC facility for at least an hour for six days a week. I go for a walk, while he jogs at the club for almost an hour, and then there is a 30-minute swimming session. Even my younger son Moin (Khan) has lost a lot of weight,” he said.
The Khans have also changed their diet to remove excess fat from their bodies - they stopped eating carbohydrate-heavy meals, cut down oil consumption, and added more nourishing food items to their daily diet chart.
“Sarfaraz and I have stopped eating aata (flour) and rice at home completely. Our diet is now strict but interesting - we eat vegetable sauté with boiled chicken, boiled eggs, and drink green tea and black coffee. We are using very little (olive) oil in our food,” Naushad revealed.
The strict diet means Sarfaraz is no longer feasting on his favourite non-vegetarian dishes - particularly chicken and mutton biryani - but it is a sacrifice that the middle-order batter has consciously made to drastically improve his fitness.
With a leaner and fitter physique, Sarfaraz is set to embark on the gruelling England series. A good outing with India A may well bring him back into the selectors' radar, with the Indian senior team set to play a five-Test series in England starting June 20.
India ‘A’ will play two four-day matches against England Lions, starting on May 30 in Canterbury. The Indian squad will also play an ‘intra-squad’ game from June 13 in Beckenham.
