Shubman Gill continued his purple patch in IPL 2025 and played another vital knock for Gujarat Titans (GT). Shubman has been enjoying a dream run of late and his success with the bat has already seen him join the leadership group in white-ball cricket. He is now the front-runner to be named the Test captain.
Shubman has broken plenty of records since his senior cricket debut in 2017 and there has been no stopping him since his India debut. During the IPL 2025 match between Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals (DC), the right-handed batsman went past Virat Kohli in the list of quickest batsmen to score 5000 T20 runs.
Shubman, who is leading GT in IPL 2025, breached the 5000-run mark in his 154th innings. Virat, who is IPL's highest run-scorer, took 167 innings to complete 5000 runs in the shortest format.
KL Rahul is the quickest Indian to do so. The former India T20I vice-captain only took 143 innings. He is at the second spot, behind Chris Gayle, in the overall list. Shubman has been excelling in all three formats and he could very well become India's all-format captain in 2027.
Shubman Gill's T20 career
Shubman made his T20 debut for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2018. He made his T20I debut in January 2023. He missed out on making it to India's 2024 T20 World Cup squad. He made his T20I captaincy debut in the series against Zimbabwe, which was played after the ICC event.
A series later, he was named India's white-ball vice-captain. Shubman has 5072 T20 runs in 154 innings. His tally includes 6 centuries and 32 half-centuries. He replaced Hardik Pandya as GT's captain following his move to Mumbai Indians before IPL 2024.
Shubman-led GT crashed out of the league stage of IPL 2024 but they have qualified for the IPL 2025 playoffs. GT won the IPL 2022 season under Hardik's leadership.
