As India's search for the next Test captain continues, Shubman Gill has emerged as the favourite candidate for the post. The Gujarat Titans captain has showcased his leadership calibre in IPL 2025.
Gujarat Titans are currently in second place on the points table and are among the favourites to win IPL 2025. The Titans will face Delhi Capitals on Sunday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Gill, 25, has demonstrated tremendous character and impressed with his captaincy in IPL 2025. He has also led the team from the front, scoring 508 runs from 11 matches at an average of 50.80. With India set to tour England for a five-match Test series, Gill, if chosen as the captain, will lead a young side, as former Test captain Rohit Sharma and senior batter Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket earlier this month.
“He’s been fantastic with the way he’s been around with the group. I don’t need to mention how well he is batting right now and the way he is handling the situation. He has been scoring a lot of runs and managing the team really well,” Titans assistant coach Parthiv Patel said on Saturday.
“He’s been very proactive on the field and off it. In fact, he plays an important role off the field. He spends a lot of time with the young players. I’ve said this before too. You can see actually Shubman Gill the captain in the dressing room. That’s what you want in a leader,” Patel said before adding, “Going forward, I can’t comment on whatever the talks (in the India camp) are, but Shubman Gill as Gujarat Titans captain has been fantastic.”
In Sunday's IPL 2025 match, while the Titans will look to seal their playoff spot, the Capitals, currently ranked fifth, will aim to resurrect their campaign.
