Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders made a league stage exit from the IPL 2025.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) exited the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Saturday after their match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) was abandoned due to rain in Bengaluru. This was the second time in IPL 2025 that KKR had to be part of a washout fixture, resulting in their elimination from the T20 tournament.
KKR, the defending champions, failed to qualify for the playoffs. This marked the third straight time the franchise made a league stage exit from the IPL as the reigning champions.
Last year, KKR won the IPL under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, but this season their new captain, Ajinkya Rahane, could not inspire the team to retain consistency.
KKR first won the IPL in 2012 and then again in 2014. But in the succeeding season both times, they failed to qualify for the playoffs.
With their exit from IPL 2025, KKR joined Mumbai Indians as the only other side to get knocked out at the group stage thrice as defending champions.
In the second edition of the IPL in 2009, the previous edition's champions, Rajasthan Royals, became the first-ever team to make a league stage exit.
While MI and KKR have made league stage exits thrice, Chennai Super Kings are the only other side to make a group stage exit more than once — in 2022 and 2024 as defending champions.
KKR will now be keen to wrap up their IPL 2025 campaign with a win when they face Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 25.
