Former South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs believes that Rohit Sharma is technically superior to Virat Kohli, given the range of shots the 38-year-old can play on different surfaces, as compared to Kohli, whose desire to dominate, especially in white ball format, is a major difference between the two Indian batters. Gibbs assessed while responding to fans on X (formerly Twitter), where a user uploaded a clip in an attempt to explain how the 36-year-old keeps trying to play the same shot while Rohit explores different options to score.
"This is the real difference between them. Kohli tries to play the same type of shot every time, even if he gets out doing it. He doesn't elevate his game. But Rohit literally tries different kinds of shots every time, even in his worst form. Kohli doesn't have that ability to adapt, but Rohit does, that's why Rohit has succeeded in playing fine Test cricket even after his mid-30s," the user wrote on X.
Gibbs explained that, "It’s up to the batting coach to give him more options to score no matter who the batter is.. Thank me later," and went on to add, "Rohit was always more technically correct than Virat. But Virat's desire to dominate, especially in white ball format, is a major difference between the 2 batters."

He further went on to validate his point by stating that a player has to invest in the nets to play more shots till the time he is confident of taking down any bowler on any surface, and a coach can’t force a player to play shots that he normally doesn't play, but can only encourage the player to add to its scoring repertoire, adding that, "He (Kohli) never practiced it enough to do it consistently and in a match (sweep shot)."
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket within a week ahead of India's all-important five-match Test series in England. The series against England will mark the beginning of India's World Test Championship campaign for the 2025-27 cycle.
