Mitchell Owen has joined to the Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the remainder of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). PBKS signed the Australian all-rounder for Rs 3 crore after Glenn Maxwell was ruled out from the tournament owing to a fractured finger.
According to earlier reports, Owen would only sign with PBKS after completing his duties with the Babar Azam-led Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). However, the 23-year-old quit the PSL in the middle of the season, leaving Zalmi with a chance to make it to the playoffs.
Due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, the IPL and PSL were paused midway through and are scheduled to resume on May 17. When Owen played for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024–25, he finished as the league's top run scorer, sending him into the spotlight.
After defeating David Warner's Sydney Thunder, Owen helped the Hurricanes win their first BBL championship with a century off 39 balls in the final. Owen assisted the Hurricanes in chasing 183 with 35 balls remaining after scoring 108 off 42 balls with six fours and eleven sixes.
Owen amassed 102 runs from seven innings for the Zalmi in the 2025 PSL at a strike rate of 192.45 and an average of 14.57. In the SA20 2025, Owen also played for the Paarl Royals.
Meanwhile, PBKS needs one more victory to guarantee their spot in the playoffs. Shreyas Iyer's team, who are now in third place in the standings, will next play the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Sunday, May 18 at Jaipur's Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will play each other at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 17 to kick off the IPL.
