Former India cricketer Yograj Singh expressed his opinion on legendary Indian batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test Cricket and said that great players have to continue playing until they are fifty years old. The retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in span of five days have left the Indian Test team with huge gaps.
On June 20, the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle 2025–2027 will begin, and the Indian team will embark on a crucial five-match Test series tour of England. Yograj expressed his thoughts on the retirement of Rohit and Kohli prior to the series, saying that the squad would suffer a great loss.
"Virat is a big player, so it will obviously be a loss. When many players were either removed, retired, or coerced into retirement in 2011, the team fell apart and has still not stood back up. everyone's time comes. I feel a lot of cricket is still left in Virat and Rohit,” Yograj told ANI.
The former all-rounder also cautioned against building a side entirely of young players because it might not hold up in England's harsh environment. In addition, he expressed sadness that no one was present to inspire Rohit and Kohli and recommended that great players continue to play till they are fifty years old.
"If you form a team full of youngsters, it will always fall apart. Maybe Virat feels that he has nothing more left to achieve. If you form a team full of youngsters, it will always fall apart. Maybe Virat feels that he has nothing more left to achieve. The greatest players should play till 50 years of age... I am sad about their retirement as no one is left to motivate the youngsters now,” he added.
