India will face a tectonic shift in Test Cricket as they travel to England for a crucial five-match Test Series. Within a span of just one week, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the longest format of the game. Rohit's retirement has now sent India in search for their new Test captain, and according to reports, it looks like Shubman Gill is all set to take the mantle. However, former India opener and 1983 World Cup winner Kris Srikkanth has said that Gill's place is not even certain in Tests and wants someone else to lead the team.
In an interaction with The Times of India, Srikkanth said that he wants Jasprit Bumrah to captain the Indian test team. In case the star pacer is not available or unfit, then KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant should handle the mantle.
“He (Gill) is not even a certainty in Test cricket. The captaincy should be given to Jasprit Bumrah, and if he is not fit or available for any match, then KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant should lead India," he said.
KL Rahul Should Be India's No.4
With Virat Kohli retiring from Test cricket, the big question is who will now come out to bat at no.4 for India. Kris Srikkanth has suggested that KL Rahul should come in to bat at that position.
“Coming to the question about India’s next No. 4 in Test cricket, for me, KL Rahul should be given that position. He can be India’s lynchpin going forward in Test cricket. He has got the right technique, and the management should give him that fixed role," he said.
Virat Kohli Should Have Been Given Captaincy
The legendary opener also said that the selectors should have just given the captaincy to Virat Kohli so that he could play Test cricket for the next two-three years.
“It’s a big question, a massive void. Virat was the torchbearer of Test cricket. He played the game with passion and aggression, and that was the greatness of Virat. Frankly, the selectors should have given him the captaincy, and he should have played for the next two to three years. But now we can only wish him well," he added.
