Cricket Australia issued a statement on Tuesday stating it will support the "individual decisions" of players who choose not to travel back to India for the IPL 2025, which will resume on May 17.
The BCCI on Monday announced a revised schedule for the remaining 16 matches, including playoffs and the final, after the league was paused for a week in the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
Since the BCCI asked the franchises to reassemble their teams, there is growing concern about the return of overseas players, who boarded the next available flights to leave India after the BCCI suspended the IPL for a week. The suspension came after the game between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals had to be called off in Dharamshala on May 9 due to missile and drone attacks by Pakistan across Indian cities and military establishments near the Line of Actual Control (LOC).
“Cricket Australia will support players in their individual decisions whether to return to India or not,” CA said in an official statement. “Team management will work through preparation implications for the World Test Championship final for those players who choose to play in the remaining IPL matches.”
"We are maintaining communication with the Australian Government and BCCI around security arrangements and safety," the statement further added.
As per the revised IPL 2025 schedule, the final will be held on June 3. With Australia scheduled to play the World Test Championship final against South Africa, starting June 11 at Lord's, there will be only eight days for the players to prepare for the five-day game mentally and physically.
Australian stars like Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, and Mitchell Starc are part of the IPL, and they hold key to Australia's success in the WTC final. Hazlewood, the bowling spearhead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, is currently recovering from a shoulder injury.
With franchises trying to rearrange their core teams to keep their grip over the tournament intact, it will be interesting to see how the situation unfolds in the wake of CA's latest statement.
