Virat Kohli brought down curtains on his illustrous Test career and announced his retirement from the format on Monday (May 12). The India legend made his Test debut against West Indies in 2011. He got dropped from the Test team early in his career. It took Virat less than six months to cement his place in the Test team.
Virat's purple patch in Test cricket saw him join the leadership group in 2014 and he made his captaincy debut in the first Test of the 2014/15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. A fit-again MS Dhoni returned to lead India in the next 2 Tests.
Dhoni's retirement after the 3rd Test paved the way for Virat to become India's full-time Test captain. Virat took India to new heights in Test cricket and led the country to 40 wins from 68 matches.
A day after the Test series defeat against South Africa, in 2022, Virat stepped down as the Test captain. He played under Rohit Sharma's for the next 3 years. As destiny would have it, Virat ended his Test career as the captain.
Yes, he was leading India on the third and the final day of the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India lost the game on the third day. Jasprit Bumrah once again led the team in Rohit Sharma's absence.
Rohit, who recently retired from Test cricket, stood down from the fifth Test following his below-par performance in the red-ball cricket. Bumrah suffered a back issue while bowling in Australia's first innings and didn't come on the field in the home team's chase.
Virat took over the job on a stand-in basis and led the team. India failed to defend a target of 162 and lost the series 3-1. That turned out to be his last day on the field in Test cricket. India will make their return to Test cricket in June and travel to England for 5 Test matches.
