India legend Virat Kohli announced a shock retirement from Test cricket on Monday (May 12). Virat shared a post on Instagram to make the mega announcement. The right-handed batsman made his Test debut against West Indies in 2011. He played his final Test match against Australia in January 2025.

The future ICC Hall of Famer confirmed his ODI future in his retirment post and wrote that he has only retired from Test cricket. "It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life. There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever," he wrote on Instagram

"As I step away from this format, it’s not easy — but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for."

Once one of the most consistent batsmen, Virat averaged above 50 at the same time in all three formats. However, his performance dropped after the sport resumed later in 2020.

Virat struggled for big runs and a century eluded him for nearly 3 years. He scored his first century since November 2019 in a T20I in September 2022. He scored his first Test ton since 2019 in March 2023. He has already retired from T20Is and is now only active in ODI cricket.

Rohit Sharma, Virat's former captain, also recently retired from Test cricket. Both the India legends will only play ODI cricket now. Rohit played his last Test in the fourth game of the series while Virat played all five matches Down Under.

R Ashwin retired from all formats during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after the third Test match and returned home.
