Virat Kohli's future in international cricket has come under major doubt after several reports revealed that he has decided to retire from Test cricket and communicated his decision to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The published information has also stated that the BCCI has asked Kohli to reconsider his decision ahead of India's tour of England, where they will play a marquee five-match Test series from June 20, which will also mark the start of a new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
It remains to be seen if Kohli sticks to his decision as he is yet to comment on the speculation. However, the news has divided opinions with many calling for the former India captain to continue playing ahead of the important tour with the 36-year-old also nearing the 10,000 run mark in Test cricket.

When Virat Kohli Revealed 2022 Retirement Plans

This is not the first time that Kohli has contemplated retirement as the star Indian cricketer revealed that he was prepared to quit the sport in 2022 ahead of the Asia Cup following a horrid run of form. The 36-year-old came into the mega tournament at a time when he was on a nearly three-year drought without an international century. The tournament also came with Kohli in a nightrun of form with a disastrous 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as well as a poor tour of England in which he failed to score 100 runs across six innings in three formats, while not even scoring a single half-century.
In an interaction during the 2023 IPL with Robin Uthappa, Kohli revealed he went into the tournament knowing this could mark the end of his career if he did not perform and stated that he was willing to accept that it might his last month in international cricket.
"The most important factor in that whole transnational period before the Asia Cup last year was the fact that I was willing to let go of everything. I was willing to accept that when I go back and play, it might be the last month of me playing competitive cricket and I am absolutely okay with it," said Kohli in an interview with Robin Uthappa on Jio Cinema.
"Everyone was like we observe this and this is the solution for it. I couldn't get the point across that whatever shortcoming is, there is because of this (pointing towards his head). When you are not right mentally, you are all over the place. There were no technical issues because I have done this for 15 years. It can't be that all went to a standstill and the technical issues pop out right now. When I came back fresh and started hitting the ball again and people were like 'oh you made some serious changes'. But I didn't pick up the bat for six weeks," Kohli added.
In that tournament, Kohli made a remarkable turnaround to finish as he finished as the second highest run-getter with 276 runs in five innings at an average of 92. He ended his century drought with a ton against Afghanistan.
Since making his 71st ton in September 2022, Kohli now has 82 centuries to his name across formats in international cricket.
