As chatter around Virat Kohli's retirement from Test cricket intensified, an old interview of the cricketer went viral. In the video, Kohli is seen talking about his goal of joining the elite league of Test cricketers by scoring 10,000 runs.
“I do not keep track of records at all. When I score a century in a match, I find out afterwards that it was the quickest to 10 centuries or something like that. So I only get to know about it after the match. Before the match, my focus is not on things like, ‘I have 5 innings left, and if I score 3 more centuries, I will set a record.’ I do not think that way."
"My aim is to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket, and that is something I really want to achieve,” Kohli said in Aaj Tak’s ‘Seedhi Baat’ in a 2013 interview.
According to recent media reports, Kohli is not happy with his dismal form in Test cricket since India's tour of Australia in 2024–25. He managed just one hundred in Perth and ended the five-match series with a dismal average of 23.75.
In March, ahead of the IPL 2025, Kohli, during an event of his franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru, spoke about his disappointment with his poor form. “I might not have an Australia tour again in me in four years’ time,” he said. However, in the IPL 2025, Kohli has shown signs of getting his mojo back, scoring 505 runs from 11 matches.
Kohli, however, has reportedly been annoyed with BCCI's decision to not hand over the captaincy to him after Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket.
Kohli is 770 runs away from becoming only the eighth batter in history to score 10,000 runs in both Tests and ODIs. Since his debut in Test cricket in 2011, Kohli has played 123 Tests, scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85. In ODI cricket, Kohli scored 14,181 runs from 302 matches at an astonishing average of 57.88.
Among the Indian batters, Kohli is the fourth-highest run-getter in Test cricket, trailing Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Rahul Dravid (13,288), and Sunil Gavaskar (10,122).
