The Indian selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, is likely to announce the squad for the five-match series against England in the fourth week of May. India are set to have a new captain following Rohit Sharma's retirement. Multiple reports have confirmed that Shubman Gill, who has never been part of the leadership group in Tests, is set to be named the new captain.
There will be few more changes in the team. The Times of India has reported that Sarfaraz Khan could lose his place in the squad. Rajat Patidar, who is leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2025, has emerged as a strong contender to replace him in the Test team, TOI has reported.
Sarfaraz was part of the sqiad for the Australia series but didn't get a place in the final XI in any of the five Test matches. The right-handed batsman went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega-auction and isn't part of the ongoing season.
Both Rajat and Sarfaraz made their Test debuts in the home series against England early in 2024. Rajat made his debut in the second Test in Vizag and played 3 games in the series. He only managed to score 63 runs across six innings. He was dropped after the series.
Sarfaraz was handed his maiden Test cap in the third Test in Rajkot. He has been a regular in the Test team since his debut and has scored 371 runs in six Tests.
India vs England schedule
India will tour England for a five-match Test series from June 20 to August 4. The matches will be played in Leeds, Birmingham, Lord's, Manchester and Kennington Oval from June 20, July 2, 10, 23 and 31, respectively.
India are likely to be without the services of Virat Kohli as he has informed the BCCI about his retirement from Test cricket. The board will hold a meeting with the former India captain and ask him to reconsider his decision.
