Australian cricketers remain uncertain even as the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) resumes after a week-long pause. According to The West Australian, the players boarded flights out of India on Saturday and are unlikely to return for the IPL.
Immediately after the BCCI suspended IPL 2025 following the abandonment of the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamshala - amid missile and drone attacks by Pakistan in cities across the northern and western border - teams began disbanding, and players boarded the next available flights to their respective destinations.
A majority of the overseas players had left by the weekend. In the wake of escalating tensions, most players began their journeys home, boarding multi-leg flights.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) offered the BCCI to host the remainder of the IPL matches - 16 matches still left to be played, including the playoffs and the final, scheduled for May 25 - in September. There are also talks to host those matches in South Indian cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad - far away from the Pakistan border. It appears to be a likely option.
India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday, mediated by the United States. However, violations of the agreement remain rampant, with India accusing Pakistan of ceasefire violations along the Line of Actual Control (LOC), especially in Jammu and Kashmir.
Since franchises like Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings are already out of playoff contention - with each only having one or two games left - the players might not be interested in returning.
With Australia set to begin preparations for the World Test Championship final against South Africa starting on June 11, it is very unlikely that their players will be available for the remainder of the IPL 2025 matches.
"The safety and welfare of our players and staff is always a core priority and we support today’s decision by the BCCI," Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg said.
"We continue to work closely with the Australian Government, PCB and BCCI and are maintaining regular communication with players and support staff in both India and Pakistan," he added.
Australia's Test captain Pat Cummins, fellow pacers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, and star batter Travis Head are among the notable Australian cricketers featuring in IPL 2025. Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis, Mitch Marsh, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, and Xavier Bartlett are among other Australians involved, while several Australians like former captain Ricky Ponting are part of the coaching staff.
