Virat Kohli is adamant about retiring from Test cricket despite calls from the BCCI to reconsider his decision, according to a report in TOI. The BCCI wants Kohli to be on the flight to England, but the veteran seems to have made up his mind. On Saturday, reports of Virat Kohli informing the BCCI about his intent to retire from Test cricket shocked the cricket fraternity.
"Kohli had informed the selectors two weeks ago about his desire to quit Tests. They were trying to persuade him to play in the Test series against England. However, he is still firm on his stance. The final call will come close to the selection meeting next week," TOI quoted a source as saying.
While there was no clear reason given, speculations are rife that his extended poor run in Test cricket prompted him to take the decision. There is no official confirmation from Kohli on his stance yet. Kohli had a horrific series against Australia where he scored 190 runs in five Tests, including a hundred at an average of 23.75. This was not a one-off series where Kohli didn't perform. In fact, he didn't make any significant runs in the last five years in Test cricket. In 37 Tests played during that period, Kohli only scored 1990 runs, including three hundreds, which is way below the standard he set for himself. Kohli's Test record stands at 9230 runs in 123 Tests at an average of 46.85.
Kohli was on fire in the IPL 2025 and scored over 505 runs in 11 games. The fans were elated to see Kohli back in form and were optimistic about him doing well in England, however, the latest developments have left his huge fan base in shock.
