India and England will renew their rivalry and square off in a five-match Test series, starting June 20. India will have a new captain in the series following Rohit Sharma's retirement. Shubman Gill is the front-runner to take over the top job. Before the Test series, India A will play three unofficial Test matches against England Lions. The matches will be played from May 26 to June 19.
Plenty of players who will be part of the Test team are likely to play the unofficial Test matches. Shreyas Iyer could return as the captain while Ishan Kishan could retain his place in the India A team. Here, we have a look at India A's probable squad for the three-match unofficial Test series against England Lions.
Openers
Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devdutt Padikkal could be the 4 openers in the India A squad for the three-match series. Ruturaj, who got injured during IPL, is likely to get fit in the next few weeks and he would be on the flight to England if available.
There is no doubt over the selections of Sudharsan and Easwaran. Sudharsan could also make it to the national squad. Padikkal got injured during IPL 2025 and got ruled out. If fit, he will be on the flight to England.
Middle-order
Shreyas Iyer is likely to make his India A comeback as the captain. He isn't in the scheme of things in red-ball cricket but with an eye on the future, he could be handed his return. Iyer is the former all-format India A captain and he could lead the team once again.
Karun Nair could be rewarded for his domestic performances with a place in the India A team. Sarfaraz Khan is likely to play for India A before the Test series.
All-rounders
Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Tanush Kotian are likely to be three all-rounders in the team. Nitish is a confirmed selection in the playing XI during the Test series and he will get much-needed practice in England before the Test series.
Wicketkeepers
Dhruv Jurel and Ishan Kishan are likely to be two wicketkeepers in the team. Rishabh Pant is the first-choice wicketkeeper in the Test team. One of Dhruv and Ishan will be named as the reserve wicketkeeper.
Bowlers
India's complete pace battery, barring Jasprit Bumrah, is likely to be part of the unofficial Test series. Mohammed Shami hasn't played a first-class game since November 2024 and he will have a chance to get used to first-class cricket by playing for India A.
Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj are likely to be part of the team. The team management can rotate players in the first two games. Axar Patel could also be selected in the team. The India-bound players will not be part of the third unofficial Test match as it will end on June 19, just a day before the start of the Test series.
