Rohit Sharma will not be playing for India in their next five-Test match series against England since the 38-year-old has formally announced his retirement from the game's longest format and if the reports are to be believed even Virat Kohli is considering hanging his boots from the red-ball format as he has reportedly informed the Indian cricket board, BCCI that he is finished playing Test cricket.
According to the Sports Tak report, the selectors will need to choose a new captain for the forthcoming red-ball series against England because Rohit has announced his retirement from Test cricket. Young batter Shubman Gill is presently leading the campaign for captaincy.
According to the report, Gill was scheduled to have lunch with the Indian head coach in New Delhi, but the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 suspension caused the meeting to be postponed. The team for the England series will probably be revealed on May 16 or 17, according to the rumours, and some members are supporting KL Rahul for the captaincy position.
In addition to announcing the team, Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of India, will go to England on June 6 to prepare for the Test series.
Shubman Gill, who is leading the race to captain India in Tests, was named captain of a team that was missing several first-choice players after India's victory in the previous T20 World Cup and led the team in five T20Is. However, he has never led in Test matches or ODIs. It appears that selectors and the BCCI have been impressed by his leadership abilities. In 32 Test matches, Gill amassed 1893 runs, including five hundred and seven half-centuries in 59 innings at an average of 35.0.05. His best score was 128.
The first red-ball assignment for the Men in Blue following a lacklustre performance in Australia during the five-Test match series of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024–25 is the India vs England series, which is set to begin on June 20.
