Rohit Sharma shocked the cricketing world when he announced his retirement from Test Cricket on Wednesday, May 8. This came with just over a month remaining for India's five-match series against England. Reports have claimed that the BCCI did not want Rohit to lead the side going into the new WTC 2025-27 cycle, and this prompted the 38-year-old star batter to call it a day on his Test career. However, Rohit's childhood coach Dinesh Lad has denied that the India-England series had anything to do with influencing his decision to retire.
In an interaction with PTI, Dinesh Lad revealed that the main thought behind Rohit's decision to retire from Tests is to give the next generation a chance. This is similar to why he announced his T20I retirement after winning the T20 World Cup 2024.
"He didn't take the decision in a hurry. It's not that he retired because of his form. He didn't want to play T20Is after the World Cup, but it was his decision to continue with the other two formats he must have thought carefully about what was best for him to do," Lad said.
"This decision has nothing to do with the upcoming tour of England. The main thought would have been to give the next generation a chance, just like he did after the T20 World Cup last year," Rohit's childhood coach added.

'Want Rohit To Retire After ODI World Cup 2027'

Rohit Sharma has clearly mentioned that while he has retired from Tests and T20Is, he would continue to play in the ODI format. Dinesh Lad has expressed his wish to see Rohit retire after winning the ODI World Cup 2027. He also revealed that Rohit's next target was to win the World Test Championship, which he could not achieve because he retired.
"His target was the World Test Championship, but unfortunately we didn't qualify. Now, it's the 2027 World Cup. I also want him to win the 2027 World Cup and then retire," Lad added.
