Even though Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket marked the end of an incredible journey in the red ball, many cricket fans are still hoping for more because of the way he departed from the purest format of the game. Manoj Tiwari, a former cricket player for India, feels that the 38-year-old captain, who distinguished himself in Indian cricket across all formats, ought to have been accorded a fitting farewell on the field rather than via a social media post.
Manoj Tiwary On Rohit Sharma's Farewell
"If Rohit Sharma had retired not on social media but on the field after playing, it would have been a more fitting send-off. It would've felt better for all of us too. Just look at his record as a Test captain-it's very good. He's won 12 Tests, lost 9, and drawn 3. So there's no doubt about his success rate-it's solid," Tiwari told Cricbuzz.
Only a few weeks before India's five-Test series against England began on June 20, Rohit announced his retirement from the red-ball format with immediate effect. Since the World Test Championship began, Rohit has been India's most prolific batter, amassing 4301 runs at an average of 40.57 in 67 Test matches, including 12 hundreds and 18 half-centuries.
After leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit has already stepped away from T20 Internationals and will only be seen in the ODI format, where he still serves as captain.
A mainstay of Indian cricket, Rohit captained the national squad and won two of the four ICC finals. His legacy in the 50-over game is certain thanks to his more than 11,000 runs and 32 centuries in ODIs. However, one of the pivotal moments in his career was his ascent in Test cricket, especially after he accepted the task of opening the innings in 2019.
Rohit's former domestic teammate Tiwari commended his leadership and the deference he received in the locker room. "He was a very popular leader among this group of boys. If you see, even the young players wanted to play under him. We always hear them say in their interviews, 'I really enjoyed playing under Rohit Sharma's captaincy.'"
Even though Jasprit Bumrah has captained the team in the past, there are always questions about his fitness. KL Rahul and Shubman Gill are seen as the front-runners as Rohit's successors. However, Rishabh Pant's name is also in the running following his comeback to fitness and form in the red-ball format.
