More than a month before the start of the India-England Test series, Rohit Sharma gave up the longest format. The former India Test captain took to Instagram to make the mega announcement. Rohit, who gave up T20I cricket after leading India to a title win in the 2024 World Cup, also confirmed his ODI future.

Rohit confirmed that he will continue to play ODIs. It is now the only format where Rohit is active in in international cricket. "Hello everyone I would just like to share that l am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format," he wrote.

Rohit made his much-awaited Test debut in 2013 against West Indies. He made a memorable debut and smashed centuries in back-to-back games. However, he couldn't continue his form and was in and out of the Test team till 2019.

After being shockingly ignored for the England tour in 2018, Rohit made a return at the end of the year for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rohit was once again benched for the two-match Test series against West Indies despite slamming 5 centuries in the 2019 World Cup.

Rohit was promoted to open the innings, starting the home series against South Africa in October 2019 and there was no looking back for him after that. His success with the bat saw him replace Virat Kohli as the Test captain early in 2022.

Rohit-led India were enjoying huge success but the series defeats against New Zealand (at home) and Australia raised plenty of questions on him. Rohit stood down from the fifth Test match and handed over the job to Jasprit Bumrah.

Bumrah seems the front-runner to replace Rohit as the Test captain as he has been his deputy since 2022. But given his fitness issues, the right-arm pacer could also miss out.
